A bereaved mother has warned of the dangers of the prescription drug pregabalin following the death of her 21-year-old daughter. 

Jasmin Duddy was found unresponsive at a house in Galliagh in Derry on February 1  this year after taking the drug along with other substances. 

The mother-of-one, from Creggan, Derry, had been trying to get help for her drug addiction but died after taking a deadly combination of pregabalin and another anti-anxiety medication. 

In the wake of her death, her mother Pauline has said that more needs to be done to clamp down on prescription drugs being sold on the streets as she fears people ‘can get drugs quicker than you can get chocolate out of the shop’.

It comes as the number of deaths involving pregabalin in England and Wales have increased dramatically in recent years, with 90 recorded in 2015 which have more than quadrupled to 409 deaths in 2021.

Pauline said Jasmin had been trying to overcome her addiction and was ‘doing really well’ after receiving treatment at hospital. 

But she recevied a phone call from her daughter on the day of her death and could tell that she was intoxicated. She later texted her to sober up to which Jasmin replied back saying ‘Mum, I’m trying’. 

Pauline told BBC News NI: ‘So at 4 o’clock in the morning I was asleep and then there was police at the door and they said they wanted to come in to discuss a sensitive matter and they told me that my daughter was found deceased.

‘I don’t understand why that day – that’s the question that keeps going round my mind – why that day did she decide to put those tablets in her mouth.

‘She was off all the tablets, she was doing really well, and I don’t know what changed on the 1st February to make her put tablets into her mouth. That will never be answered.

‘It has left the whole family devastated and there’s a lot more families going through the exact same at the minute – we are the families left behind.’

Pauline believes that more needs to be done to tackle the drug problem in the north west of Northern Irleand. 

She has called for longer sentences for convicted drug dealers which would help put off individuals from reoffending again when they are released. 

She said: ‘Drug dealers should be getting years and years in prison because some are coming out and reoffending, doing the exact same thing again.

‘If they do a long stretch in prison, maybe they’ll change when they come out, 15 or 20 years in jail they’ll have plenty of time to think about it.’

Pauline has now started a petition to change the law so that drug dealers are  prosecuted with murder and therefore face longer jail sentences.

Pregabalin was originally used to treat epilepsy but is also licensed to treat nerve pain and some forms of anxiety.

Use of the drug can lead to a dependency on it and side effects can include drowsiness, dizziness and headaches.

A small number of people taking pregabalin have also had thoughts of harming themselves, even after just a week of treatment, according to the NHS.

Professor Ian Hamilton, who is an honorary fellow in addiction at the Department of Health Sciences at the University of York, told MailOnline that pregabalin is an effective treatment for people suffering with chronic pain. 

He said that for the hundreds of thousands of people that live with chronic pain it has been ‘literally a life saver’ in allowing them to get on with day to day activities. 

He added that it can also be quite addictive for some people who become reliant on the drug after being prescribed it by their GP. 

Professor Hamilton said: ‘Pregabalin is something that has been around for decades but prescriptions have been kicked up since the early 2000s. That is when health professionals became concerned about it.

‘It has paradoxical effects. It causes a high but at the same time it relaxes you. That is what recreational users are seeking, that kind of mild euphoria. 

‘Its side effects are pretty varied. They can include dizziness and forgetfulness, respiritory deprivation, difficulty breathing.’

‘What happens for many people is that they get reduced prescriptions but then source more of the drug themselves.’

The 409 deaths that were recorded in England and Wales in 2021 involving pregabalin represents just less than 10% of all the 4,859 deaths related to drug poisoning that were registered in the same year. 

The number of deaths related to heroin and/or morphine have increased from 1,201 in 2015 to 1,213 in 2021 while those related to the use of cocaine have more than doubled from 320 in 2015 to 840 in 2021, according to ONS data. 

Professor Hamilton said that there was a noticeable rise in the use of opioids in 2021, during the UK’s Covid 19 lockdown. 

He said that the reason behind this was partly due to the fact that more people were spending time indoors and therefore would use opioids to help themselves relax in what was a stressful time for many. 

He added that there was also an increase in the use of more widely available opioids such as pregabalin which replaced heroin which at the time was scarce.

Professor Hamilton said that people will look to buy drugs online, which then becomes  a ‘complete lottery’ as there is no gurentee of what is in the drug or what the dose is.

‘It could be four or five times more stronger than you think. People quite rapidly find out that they have taken too much before it’s too late.’

There have been a number of deaths in Northern Ireland recently related to a particularly strong batch of pregabalin that has been sold on the streets. 

Three deaths and five cardiac arrests in the Derry City and Strabane District are being blamed on a batch of the prescription drug which is thought to be four times stronger than normal, a court heard earlier this month.

Police in Londonderry have been carrying out searches after they were made aware that a number of blister packs of the deadly batch were at large. 

A PSNI spokesperson told MailOnline: ‘Police are continuing to investigate three deaths that occurred in the Derry City & Strabane District earlier in the month, and enquiries are ongoing.

‘Detectives from Strand Road Criminal Investigation Branch, supported by Tactical Support Group colleagues, also carried out a number of searches in Derry/Londonderry on Thursday, 17th August as part of an ongoing investigation related to recent drug-related incidents in the city. 

‘A number of items were seized, and enquiries are ongoing.’

The police were made aware of the dangerous batch after they arrested a woman in connection with the death of a 20-year-old man who suffered a cardiac arrest. 

He was found with a blister pack of 15 pregabalin tablets on him with three of the tablets missing.

The woman was later found in her home with 76 pregabalin tablets, which matched those found on the deceased man along with a sum of money. 

An officer told the court there was still six blister packs missing and that the batch of tablets were ‘four times stronger’ than normal.

Pregabalin is currently listed as a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, which means that it is illegal to possess without a prescription and it is illegal to supply or sell to others. 

Illegal possession of any Class C drug is punishable with up to 2 years in prison, while supply and production could result in a sentence of up to 14 years.

It was reclassified by the government in 2018 following advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) who raised concerns over its misuse and addictive qualities.

‘There is a lot of resistance and reluctance to stop doctors prescribing it because what is the alternative. 

‘If we see a clamp down on pregabalin then there will be another drug that follows.

‘Stopping the opioid crisis is an issue for policy makers. Individual GPs don’t have a great deal of control. 

‘We need the government and the department of health to be more intelligent about solving this problem. 

He added that reviewing patients using pregabalin more regularly could also help ensure that they are using it too much. 

If it becomes apparant that a patient may need to reduce their prescription then they can discuss with their GP how things might change.
